Always Watch Your Tongue!

Watch Your Tongue!

Always Watch Your Tongue!

That little organ, our tongue, that resides in our mouths that God gave us to speak and taste with. That wonderful pink palate that brings sweet and savory splashes of joy into our lives. Yep! That little organ has the ability, with its words, to destroy or lift up the spirit of others. So, Always Watch Your Tongue!

7000 Words…Always Watch Your Tongue!

Furthermore, did you know that the average person uses their tongue to speak at least 7000 words a day with many people speaking much more than that! Oh! rust me, I know a few people that speak twice that many words. Our tongue and all the words we speak is the reason that God gave us 1 Peter 3:10 “For Whoever would love life and see good days must keep their tongue from evil and their lips from deceitful speech”. God tells us in His Word that our tongues have the incredible power to bring blessings in our life or to bring curses. And we have all, at one time or another used it to bring curses! So, Always Watch Your Tongue!

Regret

Remember that saying, “sticks and stones can break my bones, but words will never hurt me” is without a doubt untrue. Words hurt! Always Watch Your Tongue! Proverbs 12:18 says “Speaking rashly is like a piercing sword”...ouch! Our tongues can be the hardest thing to control and can leave us with the greatest regret. But there is good news! The Bible tells us that with the help of the Holy Spirit we can have power and control over our tongue. Praise Jesus for that! God always provide guidance and examples for righteous living through His Word. We can count o that!

For Example

The other day I was pulling out from our housing tract, when a lady made a quick left hand turn in front of me. I slammed on my brakes to avoid colliding with her. She proceeded to yell a few nasty remarks while waving a rude hand gesture at me!

At that split moment in time I had two choices in which I could have made. One, I could have yelled back at her and possibly waved my own rude hand gesture. Or two, I could take the high road and do what Jesus would want me to do….ignore her, turn the other cheek, adios muchacha! I chose to take the high road. I know Jesus would not have wanted me to not get angry and lose my temper in the situation.

God’s Manual

Thankfully, we as Christians have a manual that God has given us….the Holy Bible! A life manual that helps us navigate our way through this crazy place called Earth. It is so important that we, as Christian’s, display the heart of Jesus with our actions and our words. We need to practice being more like Him. So, Always Watch your Tongue!

Challenge Yourself

So, make yourself a promise to be mindful of your words and to watch your tongue. Remember that your words can bless those around you with joy or they can impart hurt and leave you with great regret.
Now, go out into this world and speak some Jesus love into people, and use those 7000 words of yours to evoke encouragement, inspiration, and love!

Questions to Ponder During the Week:

  1. In what ways can you use your words to bring encouragement and praise?

  2. Think about a situation that recently occurred in which your words did more harm than good. How could you have changed that situation to reflect Christ’s image in you?
